Detailing terms, explained.
If you're new to professional detailing, here are the terms you'll see thrown around — what they actually mean and why they matter for your vehicle.
A liquid polymer that chemically bonds to your vehicle's clear coat, forming a hard, hydrophobic layer that lasts 3 to 8 years. Blocks UV fade, repels water (it sheets off instead of pooling), resists bird droppings and bug splatter from etching in, and makes washing far easier. Not the same as wax, which lasts months. Using machine compound and polish to physically remove a microscopic layer of clear coat — taking out the swirls, holograms, water etching, and oxidation that live within it. Not filler, not masking — the defects are actually gone after correction. Typically done in 1 or 2 stages. See correction tiers →
The spiderweb-pattern micro-scratches you can see in direct sunlight on most cars. Usually caused by automatic car washes, dirty drying towels, or low-grit washing techniques. Lives in the clear coat — only paint correction removes them; wax just temporarily masks them.
The step between washing and correction. Includes clay bar (removes bonded surface contaminants like tree sap, road tar, paint overspray) and iron remover (chemically dissolves ferrous brake-dust particles embedded in the clear coat). If you skip decon, you're grinding contamination into the paint with the polisher.
The professional hand-wash method: one bucket of soapy water, one bucket of clean rinse water. Wash mitt goes into the clean rinse between each panel to release the grit before re-dunking in soap. Prevents the swirl-mark cycle that drive-through brushes and single-bucket washing create.
A pliable resin bar dragged across a soaped panel to pull out bonded contamination the wash water can't remove. After claying, the paint feels glass-smooth instead of gritty. Required prep before any correction or coating work — otherwise the polisher is dragging that grit across your clear coat.
